A recent U-Report survey revealed a startling statistic: 49% of young women in Pakistan have little to no knowledge about menstruation before experiencing their first period. In fact, over 20% will only learn about it in school. This lack of education perpetuates harmful myths surrounding menstruation, disempowering women and affecting their health.
One of the biggest challenges is that menstruation, a natural process and indicator of good health, is shrouded in taboo. Many women are unable to recognize the symptoms of underlying health conditions because of societal stigma. These taboos, rooted in cultural norms, restrict open discussions about menstruation, leaving women uninformed and at risk of serious health issues. https://borgenproject.org/period-poverty-in-pakistan/

HerCare’s Pakistan chapter, led by Muntaha Ahmed (pictured on the left), is actively working to break this cycle. Recognizing the dire need for menstrual education and resources, Muntaha took a crucial step by distributing feminine hygiene products to young girls at Government Bachal Chandio High School in Hyderabad. HerCare’s initiative not only provides practical solutions but also works to dismantle the stigma around menstruation.
By giving these young women access to essential products and information, Muntaha and our team are empowering women to take control of their health and well-being. Education and awareness are key to breaking the myths that have long held back women in Pakistan, and HerCare’s efforts mark a significant step toward creating a more informed and equitable society.
